In the text called Pictures, by Douglas Crimp, I discovered something very interesting about art, specially about picture. The text, indeed, an essay was published in a catalog by Artist Space, 1972.
To understand a picture itself, we must determine how the picture becomes a signifying structure, but not in order to uncover a lost reality. There is a illusion of something exterior to this work, as the illusion of space behind a painting’s surface.
So, when we think about art, about a paint, about a picture, about photography, etc., when you think about the art object itself, you think about its meaning. Anyway, perhaps the answer to its meaning resides in the desire.
A desire. A desire is something not real that resides on our imagination. No body, no material, no dimension, but simply a desire. It’s important to remember that the desire comes about only in the sphere of frustration, because “the image remains forever at a distance”. The image can resides in its reflection or in its shadow.
Is the art a illusion or a desire? I don’t know, because all desire may be only a illusion.
And when I say art I want to say also the emotion that art produce.
